Kevin Lawley has grown accustomed to receiving awards. Since he joined Minster Cleaning Services in 2011, he’s scooped accolades for highest banded percentage growth three times, highest Net Promoter Score 2016 and 2013 Franchisee of the Year, and now he’s added the 2016 bfa HSBC Franchisee of the Year award (B2B category). The bfa awards are the most prestigious in the franchise sector and recognise the UK’s most exceptional franchisees.
After a 30-year career with Lloyds Banking Group, Kevin followed up his long-held ambition to go into business for himself. He realised that a management franchise such as Minster would make best use of his extensive management skills while providing the safest route to business ownership. When he saw that his local Norfolk and Suffolk Minster branch was for sale, it was an opportunity too good to miss.
Five years later, he has more than trebled turnover from £420,000 to £1.4million and his business now has 170 contracts and 180 employees. Thanks to Minster's expertise in implementing cleaning regimes and practices that meet the requirements of the Care Quality Commission, he has been particularly successful in the healthcare sector with over 40 medical practice contracts. He is now making significant progress in the education sector.
Kevin says that the award is recognition of not just his own team but Minster’s highly successful business model: “Well-trained, highly motivated staff, rigorous quality control processes, managed absence cover and complete flexibility are the hallmarks of the Minster brand. Our clients have peace of mind from knowing that their cleaning is in the safe hands of experts. What’s more, by offering a comprehensive range of cleaning services, we can provide all their needs from one reliable and trusted source.”
Customer service has been key to Kevin’s business and referrals from highly satisfied customers account for around 60 per cent of new business. Minster’s managing director, Mike Parker, said: “Kevin has demonstrated just what can be achieved through a combination of strong management skills and Minster’s comprehensive support package. He has been able to get just the right balance between customer relationship management and new business acquisition by approaching the business in a planned manner with consistent, targeted growth.”
Minster has been providing office and commercial cleaning services since 1982 and attracts clients from a broad range of sectors. The market is massive and the size of territories means that there is always ample growth potential, and franchisees can build a successful, valuable business.
A bfa full member since 1992, Minster is the country’s biggest and one of the most successful commercial cleaning franchises. Annual turnover is now £37million taking the average for the 43-branch network to well over £850,000. It offers prospective franchisees a safe and secure future whether they buy a branch resale or choose a new area.
On average, franchisees have been with Minster for 13 years and some longer-serving franchisees are planning to retire in the next few years. There are currently established franchises available for resale in Dundee and Liverpool at a fee of £10,000 plus vat, in addition to the purchase price of the business.
New franchise opportunities include Cambridge, Doncaster, Durham, Leicester, London, Middlesex, Guildford, Peterborough and Swansea. Initial start-up cost is £28,225 plus vat, which covers licence, training, computer software and hardware, stationery, machinery, equipment and materials. In addition, between £40,000 and £60,000 working capital will be needed – finance is available from leading banks subject to status.
