Healthy Growth

A growth of 28% in twelve months would be excellent at any time, but in the face of one of the worst economic downturns in living memory, it is truly remarkable. Just such an achievement by Minster Cleaning Services' Leeds and Wakefield branch brings their turnover to £1.25million following a year of expansion, particularly due to new contracts in the healthcare sector.

Regional director, John Whyte explains: "Primary medical and dental services are now required to be Care Quality Commission registered. To comply with the standards for registration, their premises have to meet a number of essential standards which include the maintenance of appropriate levels of cleanliness and hygiene. By demonstrating our expertise in implementing cleaning regimes which satisfy these requirements, we have increased the number of practices for which we clean to nearly 50."

John started his Leeds franchise in 1994 after selling his share in the software company that he founded and ran successfully for 13 years. Since then, he has been Minster Cleaning Services Franchisee of the Year three times whilst building up a large and thriving business.

Five years ago, he was joined by his stepson, Marc Goddard who is now the operations director and became joint franchisee in 2011; Marc's wife, Victoria, is the office manager. This has allowed John to reduce his involvement with a view to full retirement from the business within the next year or two.

Marc is very positive about the future for the business: "The Leeds area is benefitting from substantial investment over the next few years including the recently opened £350 million Trinity Leeds retail and leisure development, the Leeds Arena which opens later this year, new terminal facilities at the airport, which will give a major boost to the local economy, and several major new office and retail developments which are underway in the city centre.

"As an essential commercial service, and with such a broad client base, we aren't great greatly affected by a downturn in any particular sector. The size of Minster's territories gives us almost unlimited scope for expansion too. Although much of our business is concentrated in Leeds, we also cover Bramhope, Garforth, Harrogate, Horsforth, Morley, Otley, Rothwell, Tadcaster, Wakefield, Wetherby, Yeadon and the surrounding areas."

All Minster franchisees can build substantial, valuable businesses and a safe and secure future; average annual turnover is now well over £700,000 across the 41 branch network and many have achieved annual sales of over £1million. Research organisation, Key Note estimated the annual UK contract cleaning market at £6.42bn in 2010 and predicts that it will reach £7.13bn by 2015.

Initial start up cost is £28,225 + VAT which covers licence, training, computer software and hardware, stationery, machinery, equipment and materials. In addition, between £40,000 and £60,000 working capital will be needed – finance is available from leading banks subject to status.
